The "goodness of fit" hypothesis between the functional characteristics of elderly persons with mental retardation and their residential placements was examined.  Persons who lived in community-based settings were compared with those in nursing homes with respect to medical status, behavior problems, formal supports, and informal supports.  On most of the functional measures, persons living in nursing homes were at least as competent as those who lived in community-based programs.

Foster family care is a residential option with potential for serving the growing number of elderly persons who are mentally retarded persons.  A unique strength of the program is its integration of residents into the life of the family.  Middle aged and elderly residents of the New York State Family Care Program who are mentally retarded were studied.  Program participants and communities are described.  Special emphasis is placed on examination of the extent to which the program provides for residents' integration into the famliy and their acceptance by, and participation in the community.
